Why We Go Salt-Free: The Heart Behind Our Spice Blends

Triple H Homestead

At Triple H Homestead, everything we offer is made with care—from the herbs we grow and wildcraft, to the way we craft each spice blend by hand. When you step into our market booth or visit the Country Store, the first thing you’ll notice isn’t packaging—it’s the smell. Fragrant herbs, warming spices, and familiar garden scents invite you in before you even see what’s on the shelf.

Our spice blends come in simple, recyclable and resealable kraft pouches—not flashy jars—because we want the focus to stay on what matters: the quality of what’s inside. When you visit our farmers market booth or stop into the Country Store, you’ll likely notice the scent before anything else. Fragrant herbs. Warm spices. Familiar garden aromas. It’s not uncommon for someone to stop, breathe in deeply, and ask with surprise,
“These smell amazing! But there’s really no salt?”

That’s right. None.

Choosing to go salt-free was personal for us. Years ago, we faced our own health concerns—especially with high blood pressure. When we started paying closer attention to what was in our food, we realized how often salt shows up in spice mixes unnecessarily.

So we went back to basics: blending only pure herbs and spices, grown, wildcrafted, and mixed by hand—no salt fillers, no shortcuts. Just clean flavor rooted in tradition and health.

In this post, we want to share why we made that choice—and why it still matters. Not just for our family, but for yours too.

What “Salt-Free” Means to Us

When we say our blends are salt-free, we mean they are truly free from:

  • Table salt or sodium additives
  • Hidden fillers or anti-caking agents
  • Preservatives or artificial flavor enhancers

Each pouch is filled only with what we’d use at our own table: whole herbs, seeds, and spices—homegrown, wildcrafted, or sourced as locally as possible, and always to our high standards.

This lets you:

  • Take full control of your salt intake
  • Season your meals to suit your family’s needs
  • Enjoy the real, undiluted flavours of traditional herbs

Why Salt Should Be Added Separately

Salts

Not all salt is bad. In fact, natural, mineral-rich salts—like Himalayan pink salt, unrefined sea salt, or Redmond Real Salt—can offer trace minerals that support hydration and electrolyte balance when used properly. These salts haven’t been stripped or bleached like table salt and can be a valuable addition to a whole-food diet.

The key is control. When salt is already blended into your seasonings, you lose the ability to adjust it to your health needs or taste preferences. By keeping our blends salt-free, you get to choose:

  • How much salt to add
  • What type of salt to use
  • Whether to skip it entirely

This flexibility is especially important for those managing high blood pressure or cooking for different dietary needs. You can season confidently, knowing exactly what’s going into your meals—and adjust to your taste accordingly.

Why We Chose Salt-Free

Here are the real reasons behind our decision:

1. Heart Health Starts in the Kitchen

We’ve met so many customers looking for natural ways to support their blood pressure and overall wellness. Reducing sodium is often the first recommendation.

By keeping our blends salt-free, we provide flavourful tools to support a healthier lifestyle—without asking you to compromise on taste.

2. We Trust You to Season Your Way

Every household is different. Some prefer bold and salty, others keep it mild. We believe you know best what your body needs.

Salt-free blends give you flexibility. Add your own salt to taste—or leave it out entirely.

3. Only What Belongs in the Jar

Every herb we use has a reason to be there. Whether it’s soothing digestion, boosting circulation, or simply tasting amazing, each ingredient has value.

We don’t use anything just to “fill space”—especially not salt. What you get is real, functional, and flavourful.

What’s Inside Our Blends?

We don’t rush the process. Our spice blends are handcrafted in small batches with:

  • Homegrown and wildcrafted herbs, from local sources, as long as they grow in our Saskatchewan climate
  • Some of the spices and herbs travel far, but still have to meet our standards (Vanilla is just one example)
  • Classic, traditional flavour combinations
  • No salt, fillers, or additives—ever

How to Use Our Salt-Free Blends

Our blends are versatile and practical for everyday meals:

  • Sprinkle on roasted veggies or potatoes, even fries
  • Add to soups, stews, or broths
  • Use as a rub for meats or grilled vegetables
  • Stir into eggs, dressings, or softened butter
  • Flavor dips, marinades, or even bread dough
  • possibilities are endless
  • Customer Favourites

Some of our most-loved blends include:

  • Homestead Dust – perfect for daily use
  • French Fry Seasoning your potatoes never tasted better
  • Lemony Dill Mixa staple here in Saskatchewan
  • Apple Pie Spicea warming, nostalgic mix for pies, desserts and homemade ice cream

These aren’t just products—they’re the same blends we use in our own kitchen every day.

Our Faith and Food

We believe food is a gift. It’s meant to nourish, to bring people together, and to honour the body God has given us.

One of the verses that guides our work is:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

This verse guides the way we work, from blending herbs to packing orders.

Removing unnecessary ingredients like salt helps us keep our products simple, honest, and in alignment with that calling.

Taste the Difference for Yourself

Salt-free doesn’t mean bland—it means intentional. If you’ve never tried a salt-free blend before, we invite you to taste the difference for yourself.
